Honours even in Gaelic Park yesterday between Rockland and New York in the hurling battle that concluded the playing year in Gaelic Park. It was a great game of hurling which ended 5-09 a piece after a great come back by New York. There was a large number of Irish American players playing which was great to see and bodes well for 2011 Junior Hurling season. With four teams looking to start Junior Hurling in 2011 the future is looking bright for the fastest and most skillful game in the world in New York.

Dan Mc Sweeney U12 memorial tournament

On Saturday Rockland GAA played host to the Dan Mc Sweeney memorial tournament. The tournament was established to commemorate Eoin Mc Sweeney's brother Dan who passed away. The Mc Sweeney family very generously supplied each player on the day with a commemorative T-shirt , medals and a trophy to remember a great member of the GAA who is no longer with us. In his speech Eoin played tribute to his brother and encouraged everyone playing the games to have fun and reminded everyone that while winning is important the most important thing in the GAA are family and friends and thats what lasts the longest.

On the playing field 7 teams participated in the blitz with the two Rockland teams giving great preformances throughout the group stages. The New York Celtics gave the preformance of the day in the semi final against Rockland Gaels but just couldnt match Rockland Harps in the final. The hosts were presented with the Dan Mc Sweeney memorial trophy much to the delight of the large crowd of parents in attendance.

The tournament concluded the Minor board season for 2010 and what a great year it was, the games program as set by our schedule chairman Tom Kerins was fantastic ensuring the best program for games in any overseas GAA county matching any schedule in Ireland, thanks a lot Tom! Looking forward to 2011 already!!

Maguire the hero as the exiles claim a famous draw!

Lonan Maguire was the toast of New York over the weekend with a last second goal to tie the game with the wee county on saturday evening in Gaelic Park. With just seconds to go the wee county looked like they were going to see out the game but a high ball into the Louth defence bounced favourably for Maguire who snuck it in past the Louth goalkeeper much to the delight of the New York faithful.

Louth burst out of the traps early on and looked like the match was going to be a one sided affair leading 1-03 to 0-01 after 10 minutes. New York were on the ropes and it looked like another defeat for the exiles was on the cards. However New York battled on throughout the half with Jason Kelly grabbing a well worked goal to tighten the gap between the teams. The New York forwards played much better as a unit than they had the previous game against Down with great scores coming from CJ Molloy and Murtagh. Carew, Power and Madden battled hard throughout the middle against Paddy Keenan Louths first ever All Star. New York's two corner backs Huvane and Lambe showed their footballing skills as well as defensive qualities limiting the two Louth Corner Forwards to very little from play. Louth cruised for much of the second half and even manager Peter Fitzpatrick came on with 10 minutes to go but Maguire had the final say for the New York team and his late finish ensured the New York supporters will view 2010 as one of the best years for the exiles in recent times.

John Brady U10 Tournament

What a day of football Saturday was! The day kicked off with the John Brady memorial tournament with 12 teams participating from all over the tri state area. Rockland GAA were the hosts and well done to the hosts for again turning in a great show catering for everyone in attendance with pizza and juice. With 29 games of football the event was a real memorable one the sunny weather making the day very enjoyable for parents and kids alike.

There was plenty of great football on display with 98 young footballers playing nearly two hours of football each . The parents seemed nearly more tired watching the kids than the players themselves! In the C final Rockland and Barnanbas played out the most exciting game of the day with Rockland launching a huge comeback in the second half to bring the game to overtime. Rockland scored a late goal in the second five minutes of overtime but the drama wasnt finished yet with Barnabas awarded a late free 15 yards out to tie the game with the hooter gone. Unfortunately for Barnabas they hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced off the line to the enormous relief of the Rockland faithful and the scheduling committee!!

In the B football the Celtics showed no tiredness from the previous nights festivities to bring the trophy back over the bridge. With some superb football from the lads the Celtics breezed through the group stages and semi finals before edging out Shannon Gaels in the final. Roared on by Tommy Traynor who had just received a life time achievment award for his contribution to the Celtics club the boys played the best football of the day much to the delight of manager Lawrence Mc Grath.

Barnabas made amends for their disappointment in the fall league by defeating the Rangers in a thrilling encounter in the A final. This was a real grudge match with the two big rivals going at it hammer and tongs over the 20 minutes with Barnabas just edging out a determined Rangers outfit to take the bragging rights back to the bronx!

Many thanks to our referees and parents for all their help on the day and especially to Tom and Dave for all their help in coordinating and scheduling the big day.

Down two point victors over the exiles

New York were unlucky to be narrowly defeated by a close to full strength Down team going down 2-06 to 2-08. Johnny Murtagh was the star of the night bagging 1-05 for the exiles whilst Marty Clarke will be sure to earn the wrath of Seamus Dooley after taking the paint of both sides of the posts with two screamers that were unlucky to go in, he later compensated with a fine penalty and some superb individual scores. James Huvane and Down exile Brendan Mc Gourty were the pick of the New York rearguard whilst Carew and Power did some great work around the middle of the field whilst Murtagh tormented Dan Gordon and the Down backs most of the evening. Jason Kelly's second half goal gave some hope to the large crowd in attendance but the All Ireland runners up did just enough to hold off a spirited New York preformance.

Sacred Heart University u18 girls blitz

On Sunday 39 U18 girls took part in Sacred Heart University , CT . Divided into 6 teams this 7 a side tournament ensured everyone involved got plenty of action. This was the first time most of the onlookers had ever seen Gaelic Football and there was plenty of top quality skill on show to convince the college staff that they wanted Gaelic Football to be part of their sports program and they committed to starting a Ladies Football club for the 2011 season! Many thanks to all the staff of the University especially former St Barnabas superstar Dean Seamus Carey and Ray Mencios and to all the speakers and catering staff who provided a lovely meal and talk for all our parents and players.

U8 blitz in Rockland

Last Saturday Rockland GAA played host to the final U8 blitz of the year and what an occasion it was! 17 teams , 136 kids and over 30 matches of football ensured a great day for all involved. It was a truly special day for the winners of the A grade St Patricks Fairfield who won an amazing final against the hosts Rockland. Setanta took the honours in a thrilling B final which went into overtime against the New York Rangers while Rockland pipped Shannon Gaels in the C competition. Many thanks to all involved in playing, coaching , hosting and organsing the event in making this a special event .

This Peter Hennessey junior memorial competition is named after a very special member of New York GAA Peter's father Peter senior was a stalwart of the Cavan GAA club for many years and the tournament is named in honour of Peter's 4 year old son who tragically lost his life on the roads in Ireland earlier this year. All our finalists were reminded that while winning and losing seems very important what really matters is family and friends. The chairperson of the Cavan football club Rosie O'Reilly made a presentation to the winning team and captain of the Setanta team.

What a weekend of football for the minor board! 7 games of high skilled football 3 fall league champions and some outstanding displays from our future stars.

The first game up the U10 final proved to be the best match of the weekend with a real tough contest between a never say die Rangers outfit and slick Barnabas team. In the end there was just a kick of the ball between the teams with Rangers taking home the honours. In the U12 game Rockland proved too much for the Celtics. The U14 also saw Rockland take home the silverware completing a perfect season for the boys taking the honours in the spring , the fall and at CYC and having a high representation on the Feile team.

Sunday @ Gaelic Park gave another feast of football with Barnabas and Rockland advancing at u16 level to the final in what should be a cracking game next week. Rangers just had too much for St Edmunds in the minors while Barnabas ran out convincing winners against the Raymonds in the final match of the weekend.

Junior Hurling in Gaelic Park!

Last Sunday saw the first Junior Hurling game in Gaelic Park for some time. Rockland V The Bronx has really turned into a grudge match in recent weeks especially given the football game in Paddys Field at 230pm. The standard on show was incredible with some scores coming from nearly 100 yards. The day was also a historic one from the newest addition to hurling the Hoboken club with three of their members playing with the bronx. We look forward to the next addition of Junior Hurling on 7th November 530pm venue tbd.

Underage hurling and camoige blitz @ GP10/24/10

Last Sunday in Gaelic Park was a tremendous day for all Hurling and Camoige enthusiasts in the New York area 146 boys and girls participated in an underage blitz which catered for players aged from 4-14. The day started at 1.30pm with u8s camoige and hurling on seperate field. The U10 camogs getting a great run out after the U8 game. The skill level on display was fantastic with many of our youngest players rising and striking the ball. Great credit to the coaches who have spent many hours in Paddys' Field , Rockland , Frank Golden Park and New Haven with our young players and to the parents who have coached our players at home. The U10 section started at 230pm with another clash between New York (North) and New York (South) with an U12 game between the fierce rivals at 330pm. The underage section concluded with the final game of the day. Many thanks to all the parents, umpires and referees and also especially toMike, Brendan, Ger, Roger, Danny, Eamon, John , Mags, Caroline, Chris , Joe , Mike R who organised and coordinated the event and also ensured that every player on the day got a hurling or camoige t shirt which had the list of names of all the players participating on the back. Many thanks to all the catering staff who provided all our players with pizza and soda after the games! We look forward to next year already and the promises of more blitzes!!

FUNdamentals program starts in Shannon Gaels

Shannon Gaels have started a FUNdamental training based program designed to develop basic skills in our youngest players from the ages of 3 and up. The emphasis of the program is on fun and enjoyment of skills through small station based activities. Games include, bowling, hurdle jump, catch and kick and the wolfman. Over 25 kids attended training with 9 parents involved as coaches. Training takes place at Sunnyside Park, Queens at the bottom of 49th street if you are interested in coaching or have a child who wishes to participate please call down next sunday at 9am and speak to Robert and the coaches.

Ladies Sevens starts in GP

Ladies 7's started last saturday night in Gaelic Park. It continues next saturday at 730pm and Friday 5th , 12th and 19th in November all at 730pm. This is desinged to keep players active over the winter months and provide young aspiring players with the experience of playing with and against our top players in an non competitive environment. Training is open to all players who will be in their 14th year in 2011 and over. If you are interested in playing in the 7's please contact Simon on 914-5738761.

Hurling Blitz @ Rockland 10/17/2010

Last Sunday Rockland GAA played host to a hurling blitz which catered for all ages from 4 to over 40. The action started at 130pm with the Under 8 teams battling it out to see who would take the bragging rights . The skils on show were fantastic and it was a pleasure to watch such talented hurlers displaying what they had learned in practice. The u10s got underway at 2pm with the u12s going at 3pm with the u14s on show later. The day ended with the Rockland Senior displaying their talent in a 9 a side game which was a joy watch. Many thanks to Rockland GAA for the use of their fine fields and to the hurling committee for organising such a fantastic tournament and for providing refreshments for everyone on the day.

Second half surge wins it

Mayo 0-19 New York 0-07

The FBD championship belongs to Mayo after a comprehensive victory over New York. The game was close for 35 minutes but when the Connaught side got into their flow they had too many weapons. For The opening ten minutes it was also all Mayo as they put five unanswered points on the board. Kevin Killeen was the free taker while Aiden O’Shea was powerful at full forward. When NY finally got going they had a brace of points from Johnny Murtagh from Johnny Murtagh. Mayo had goal chances at the offensive end with Alan Hearty and Paul Lambe pulling off good saves before NY ran out strongest in the closing fifteen minutes. Three Murtagh scores, two from frees and a Seamus Toner point cancelled out an Enda Varley score and had the sides all level at the short whistle. Toner added to the NY total and gave them their only lead of the contest three minutes into the second half. It was short lived. Four Mayo points in the next eight minutes, Enda Varley two, Kevin McLoughlin and Kevin Killeen broke the game open; they added nine further scores and were always able to find the open man as the game finished up.

New York had few players who left with reputations intact. Alan Hearty made one great stop and his kick outs had plenty of length, Kevin Smith battled hard in the middle, while Johnny Murtagh was tremendous in open play and from frees. Seamus Toner had three chances and fired two of them over the bar. Surprisingly he was taken off. Mayo had a slew of players who impressed. Ger Cafferkey when Murtagh moved away from him did well, Trevor Howley, Jimmy Killeen and Aiden O’Shea were excellent.

New York Ladies return to action !

The New York Ladies are back in action after a three year absence! As a curtain raiser to the FBD league final the ladies took on a North American select made up of representatives from Boston , Philadelphia , Washington. The game was a one sided affair with New York coming out on top by a large margin however it was the team preformance from the ladies and the team spirit that were the main positives from the day. At half time we were treated to a half time exhibition from the U8 Shannon Gaels and St Barnabas teams with Barnabas competing in their first ever Gaelic For Girls event . New Haven and St Brigids competed in a camoige u10 game highlighting the great work being done in Connecticut and the Bronx to develop camoige.

Underage girls blitz @ Rockland 10/10/10

Rockland hosted the first Gaelic for Girls parish league with 43 u18 girls participating in the event . The girls were split into six teams with Cavan, waterford, Cork, Longford, Monaghan and Derry participating in the event with each team getting 5 games and a final between Frank Treacy's Derry and Phil Sheridan's Cavan. There were some exceptional footballing displays on show with some our Feile girls really showing a positive hope for the future of New York Ladies GAA. Many thanks to all those involved in organising the event between the Gaelic for Girls and Ladies Board and Rockland GAA for hosting the proceedings.

Camoige 50th anniversary @ Gaelic Park

Camoige in New York celebrated its 50th anniversary in Gaelic Park on saturday. It was a great day for all camogs with underage and ladies games throughout the day. The action started at two with u8 and u10 games showcasing the future of Camoige in the big apple before the adult action got underway with players from chicago , washington, boston , philadelphia and new york highlighting the great work being done for Camoige overseas. Many thanks to all those involved in organising the event.

Junior Football semi final

Huge comeback for Monaghan

Monaghan 1-16 St Raymond’s 3-06

Monaghan fell behind by ten points and then stormed all the way back to get the win. They allowed St Raymond’s to jump into a 2-05 to 0-01 lead in the first t 20 minutes as they never got into the running in that time period. The Rays goals came from Shea Furlong and Michael Cody. When Monaghan did get going they had the last five points of the first stanza. Brian O’Connor was introduced and he had a huge impact on the game. Shane McKenna was also active up front as they gave the inside forwards chances. They were back within 5 and gaining momentum. They opened the second half with a further two points to open the second half Donie Broderick had a goal to again give St Raymond’s a six point lead but that was immediately cancelled out by a Paul McGlynn goal when Gary Murphy set him free. Monaghan tacked on scores at will, they had eight of the next nine points as they continually moved the ball forward and set up scoring moves. They now move into the county final next Sunday where they will meet Donegal.

Leitrim did just enough to get the victory over a dogged Kerry side that battled to the very end. Kerry were ahead by 1-02 to no score to open the game They were pulled back however over the rest of the first half by Leitrim as the side had six of the final eight points of that period. Cian Tobin was in superb form from frees as he fired over three. Despite two points from Kerry to open the second half, Leitrim again attacked. They had a free from Cian Tobin and then a long ball from Gary Driscoill was pulled down by Kenny O’Connor and deposited in the back of the net. After a Paul O’Connor score for Kerry, Leitrim tacked on four points to their total to run out four point winners in the end. They now move forward to meet Down in the semi final in two weeks time.

Breffni Boys take thriller

Cavan 1-11 Tyrone 2-07

Tyrone and Cavan served up a thriller in the final quarter final of the day when they went into extra time before Cavan clinched it with a James Moynagh score in the second last minute for the victory. The sides were tit for tat in the first half of regular time with the score 1-03 to 1-02 for Tyrone. Justin McCaffrey and Enda Lenard had traded goals, both were excellent scores. Cavan went into the lead to open the second half with three points in succession. Again however Tyrone was able to come back. A second goal from McCaffrey was followed by two points by Ronan Garvey and Johnny Murtagh a free. It left the scoreline 2-05 to 1-05 with fifteen minutes left. Tyrone were only able to get one further point as the game went to the final whistle of regular time, another excellent Garvey score as Cavan clawed back. Four points in the final fifteen minutes from Kevin Smith, two, Tomo Smith and James Moynagh a brilliant score tied the game and pushed the game into two ten minute periods of extra time. Tyrone had the first score, their only one from Aiden Power, but as the last period developed Cavan got back on terms with a Kevin McGeeney beauty from wide on the left wing. With just one minute on the clock, Man of the match James Moynagh fired over the winner when Kevin Smith set him free. Cavan now move on to play Cork in the semi final in two weeks time.

Celtic vs Rangers @ Paddys Field

Last saturday in Paddys Field NY Celtics faced the Rangers on the opening day of the Minor Board fall schedule. There was some great football on display in the u8s and u10s with the two teams battling it out in great conditions in Paddys Field. Rangers came out on top with a couple of points to spare in the U12s before the main event of the U14 match in which Rangers were victorious by a point in a thrilling contest.

Intermediate Quarter Final

Astoria power into semi finals
Astoria Gaels 1-12 Brooklyn Long Island 0-08

Astoria had too many weapons for Brooklyn/Long Island although they did make hard work of the win for long periods. The side was leading by the minimum at the break before they pulled away in the second half to take the victory. They had three of the first four points to open the game with Sean Munnelly and Shane Sweeney prominent in that period. Good play from the back by Alan Foley and Gary Cornyn was also keeping BLI chances to the =minimum. The combination side did have ten minutes in the first half when they came into the contest using points from midfielders Kevin Connolly and Pat McKeon as a springboard. Astoria was able to sneak in at 0-06 to 0-05 ahead however. Three points in the first ten minutes of the second half extended the Astoria lead. Pa Ryan made a good save for his side when he stopped a pat McKeon shot but the side did get two of the next three scores. With Kevin Connolly and Kevin Niblock the scorers. Astoria finished the game with a flourish however as they finally put away their opponents. Points from Shane Sweeney, Sean Munnelly and a brilliant goal from Conor Daly at the end of a five player move gave them the convincing win.

In a trilling encounter, Dublin prevailed over a determined Kerry side that spent forty minutes playing a man down. Dublin had a wonderful start to the contest when they added a goal to their early point, after seven minutes to cancel out a point from Kerry. They were to use goals over the hour again and again to stay in front. The sides were e3venly matched for the last nineteen minutes of the first half with Dublin sitting on a 2-03 to 0-06 lead with a minute left. This was after Eoghan O’Mahoney was sent to the line for a kick on a Dublin player 22 minutes in. In the final minute Conor Hunter was pulled down for a penalty and Declan Reilly stroked the ball to the net. They had three of the first four scores of the second half with again a goal in the mix. Conor Hunter flicked to the net after a long ball fell his way.

With eight minutes gone it was 4-05 to 0-07. Kerry started resurgence and it came on the back of Ciaran Lyng. He blasted to the net after a long solo run. Sean Purcell added two points then Justin O’Halloran found the net. Declan Reilly had a tremendous running point but then Sean Purcell jigged his way down the right wing for an outstanding goal. The sides were level. Purcell pushed them ahead for the first time in the game but Dublin replied in the best way possible. With midfielders Declan Reilly and Kevin Dwyer leading the way, they had the next five points to lead by four with time winding down. Kerry did have one last hurrah, a brilliant bullet of a goal from Lyng but time ran out and Dublin was in the semi final against Armagh in two weeks time.

St Raymond’s used a scoring burst in the second half to clinch a spot in the junior semi final where they will meet Monaghan next week. With the full forward combo of Donnie Broderick and CJ Doherty in brilliant form they were able withstand an early bombardment from they Bronx rivals before pulling away in the second half. They held a one [point lead at the break 1-05 to 0-07 after a 1-03 to 0-02 opening.

The goal came from Danny Murphy after a full field move set him up in front of goal. Michael Cody slipped him the last pass before the nifty forward slotted home. St Barnabas had a perfect start the second half when they had a Brian Dennehy goal. It came after a long free was knocked into his path by Kevin Hannon. It was to be one of only two scores for the side in the second half however as St Raymond’s went on the rampage. Rays scored 2-06 over the final 29 minutes against a Deon Norney point with Donie Broderick and sub Thomas Enright getting the majors in a dominating half of football. Broderick was lively throughout the hour showing constantly in a man of the match performance

St Barnabas 4-17 Cavan 2-05

St Barnabas had too much scoring power for a rejigged Cavan side to clinch the number three slot in the junior playoffs next week. With three goals in the first half and a slew of points in the second the Lads from Woodlawn were always in control. Conor Hogan and Sean Carbin with a brace were the goal scorers but Thomas McGovern, Adrian Clarke and Brian Dennehy caused problems up the center constantly. Cavan did have a Paul Galligan bullet goal in the opening thirty and a sublime Eugene Kyne point from the sideline as their highlights but a Deon Narney goal and nine points from all sorts of angles and range gave the winners the decision with ease.

Astoria and Roscommon faced off with playoff positioning still up in the air in the Intermediate division. It was sorted however before the ball was thrown in as the game was played as a challenge outing with a couple of guest players in the Roscommon lineout. The win puts Astoria in as the three seed and they will face Brooklyn/Long Island next Sunday in one of the quarter finals as Kerry and Dublin meet each other in the second one. The game itself started brightly for Roscommon and they had a 0-04 to 0-03 lead twenty minutes in. A goal from Derek McKenna who was very busy over the hour gave Astoria the lead after 22 minutes but it was cancelled out by James Dolan, the former Westmeath minor and senior when he crashed the ball home at the other end. It was all Astoria in the second half however and they added two goals in the first ten minutes of the half to seal the encounter. Sean Kelly raced in for the first while Shane Sweeney followed with the second a sweet stroke low to the net. After two points from play Conor Daly had the third goal of the half and fourth of the game and Astoria cruised to the end of the contest.

Loud Statement by Cork

In a repeat of the county final of last season, Cork made a loud statement with an emphatic win over Down on Saturday evening at Gaelic Park. They were led by a brilliant display by Brendan Quigley in the middle of the park as he dominated proceedings in both directions. His fielding and ball handling were tremendous. His fellow Laois native Paraig McMahon was clinical in front of goal and his blasts one in each half were outstanding. Cork jumped into an early three point lead and then reacted to two points from Down in superb fashion. They tacked on 1-05 before the break with the goal arriving after a throw up was awarded. The ball was won by Cork and Jason Kelly stormed forward. He slipped the ball to McMahon and the former Laois player did the rest. Both Kelly and McMahon also had points in the mix of scoring. They continued to hold Down scoreless as the second half unfolded with Denis McCarthy particularly impressive. Cork added their second goal after a Benny Reilly point. Brendan Quigley went on a long solo run and crashed through any would be tacklers before ah=gain laying of to Paraig McMahon. Ger McCullough had his third point of the game before Down finally got their third. It came after a 30 minute drought. Liam Farrell was the scorer and his side actually outscored Cork 4 to 3 the rest of the way but it was all cosmetic at that point.

On Sunday a large crowd gathered at Paddy's Field to celebrate the life of Martina Duffy

Formerly of Woodside, Queens and Lough Egish, Co. Monaghan, Ireland. Martina was a former member of Monaghan Ladies GAA NY and sadly passed away from cancer on March 19, 2009. Organise events on the day was the Martina Duffy Memorial Day Committee led by Marie Glennon and Sandra Carolan. There were events for all the family with soccer and Gaelic matches while also fun races and games for kids. Heartwarming speeches were made and donations were made to the Ballybay Cancer Society county monaghan.

Na Fianna was pushed all the way before they won the Sean Faherty championship with Molly O’Rourke outstanding with 11 points in the victory. Cavan had a brilliant opening to the game and had a 1-04 to 0-02 lead after ten minutes. It was all Na Fianna after that point however and they followed the lead of the player of the game to secure back to back titles.

The sides had two points a piece to open the game before Cavan had their big scoring outpour. Colleen Jordon and Emma Clarke had points before Jordon had a goal bound shot stopped by Katrina Lynch. Caitlin Hynes grabbed the rebound and forced the ball to the net off a defender. Jordon added a further point to increase the lead to 1-05 to 0-02. Na Fianna started a tremendous comeback at that point and it came from midfield dominance. Aine Dwyer, Fiona McHale and Noelle Tierney were all prominent and the early ball into Molly O’Rourke started to become effective. She had five points in the last ten minutes and also forced Fiona McLoughlin into a good save under the crossbar. Joanne McKenna also had a point and by the time the short whistle arrived Na Fianna were ahead by one 0-09 to 1-05.

The sides again swapped points to open the half as McArdle and Jordon for Cavan, McHale and O’Rourke for Na Fianna found the range. The winners again started to dominate however and they five points over the next ten minutes to put breathing room between the sides. Molly O’Rourke had three of the points as she continued her tremendous day in front of the posts. Michelle Brennan had one when she was first to react to the ball when it hit the crossbar after a Joanne McKenna free. Colleen Jordon did have a free but it was cancelled out by Joanne McKenna as Na Fianna kept the lead at five, 0-16 to 1-08. After an Aine Dwyer point Cavan had a tremendous opportunity to come back into the contest when Noelle Tierney was sin binned when she fouled in front of goal. Colleen Jordon pointed and Emma Clarke fired over their tenth as they looked to use the player advantage to sneak a result. Inexplicable the advantage was gone when Caroline McBrien was sin binned for a harmless foul that may not even have warranted a free. Fourteen a side, Na Fianna ran out the clock and even had a chance for a goal when Fiona McHale sent a screamer across the goal before the end.

Offaly are the New York Champions for the fourth time in a row after a comprehensive win over Tipperary. They used an early 0-10 to 0-02 burst to gain a lead that they never looked like losing over the hour. Tipperary did make a comeback but were still behind by four at the break. Tipp continued their good form with a scoring burst to open the second half and were within one at the fifteen minute mark. Offaly ran out the game with a four point to one swing however to run out winners.
Three points for Offaly opened the game with Stephen Brown snatching two. After a Tipperary score from Shane Quinn, Offaly added two of the next three with Darren Reilly the man who fired over from frees. Damien Hayes had the Tipperary score from play but the Offaly defense was shutting down all attacks. Offaly continued their momentum as they had the next four points and with ten minutes on the clock it was ten to two. Tipperary had a good period before the break as they tacked on four points to close within four as the half time whistle arrived in a down pour.
After a Dermot Lyng point, Tipperary continued their good form. They had four points from four different scorers, Hayes Meehan, Daly, and Quinn and were now within one with fifteen minutes gone. It was their last hurrah however as Offaly came back on the shoulders of Shane Sweeney who rattled over four points after a point from his captain Darren Reilly to again put breathing room between the sides. Damien Murray did have a point from a free as the game closed but it was too little too late.

Another action packed Sunday in Gaelic Park with wins for Kerry / Donegal , Tipperary , Down and Cork. Following on from the Tipperary's win in the hurling over Waterford a decent crowd assembled in Gaelic Park for the Peter Connaughton Final between Kerry / Donegal and Fermanagh . Kerry / Donegal dominated for most of the first half with Claire Hannon and Denise Dunnion in top form until a fabolous strike from Brianna Coyle brought Fermanagh right back into the game as half time approached , Loretta Cunningham added a second goal near the interval to put a point between the sides at the interval with Kerry / Donegal leading 1-7 to 2-3.

Kerry / Donegal pushed on in the second half and after the disappointment of last weeks game against Na Fianna took a commanding lead in the second half with Dunnion in particular in fine form with a nine point tally. Fermanagh battled back with Ashlinn Gormley and Erin Galligan in top form for the Erne exiles. Kerry / Donegal held on for with Claire Hannon and Sarah Grealis very impressive for the ladies as they went on to win the game 1-16 to 2-6.

Within two minutes of the game starting Rosie O'Reilly had the ball in the back of the Fermanagh net while Kelly Mc Ardle and Colleen Jordan added on points moments after. Linda Mc Keon then got the first of her hat trick after 10 minutes and it seemed the writing was on the wall for this match , further points from O'Reilly and Jordan left a huge gap between the teams before Ashley O'Sullivan got Fermanagh's opening score after 17 minutes . Cavan never let Fermanagh into the game and piled on further misery on the Erne exiles with Mc Keon getting her second in the bottom left of the Fermanagh net , Roisin Toner gave some home to the Fermanagh girls with a fine score on 22 minutes but at half time the difference between the teams was 12 points and there didnt seem any way back for the team in green.

Fermanagh were awarded a penalty two minutes after the interval but Loretta Cunnigham hit the shot over the bar and it seemed nothing was going Fermanagh's way though AislinnGormely did seem to be carrying the fight to the Cavan girls making some searing runs into the Fermanagh defence. Further points from Caitlin Hynes , Mc Ardle, Jordan and O'Reilly put further points between the teams. But this was not just a forward show all the Cavan backs really impressed and wouldn't give an inch to their markers with Ashley Callery a commanding presence at full back and Caroline Mc Brein and Katie Kilkenny doing a great job in the corner. Erin Galligan finished a great move to put some respectability to the scoreline with a fantastic goal. Emma Clarke came on for the Cavan girls and got a great point much to the delight of the Cavan management.

Overall the game was one sided from the first number of minutes and Fermanagh will find it difficult to raise themselves for the Peter Connaughton cup final on Sunday in Gaelic Park against Kerry / Donegal but they can take the preformances of Aislinn Gormely and Donna Traynor in goals to heart and gather themselves up for sunday. For Cavan it was a case of a job done with stars all over the field, with the MVP nod going to Linda Mc Keon for three great goals from midfield. Cavan will know though that Na Fianna will be a different prospect in the county final and they will have to give their best preformance of the year to date if they are to add another trophy to the cabinet.

Na Fianna are back in the final of the Sean Faherty Ladies Championship to defend the title they won last season, they were made to fight all the way however after an outstanding second half showing from Kerry/Donegal. The combination side outscored the winners 2-10 to 1-06 in that period to level the contest with six minutes on the clock. Na Fianna were able to run out the final four points for the victory but the second half showed some major kinks in the armor. Two yellow cards for two of their summer players affected the side and Kerry/Donegal took advantage before they ran out of time in the end.

Na Fianna had a shining start to the contest with a 2-02 to no score salvo. Mary O’Rourke blasted the first from the 14 when Molly O’Rourke set her up, and then Molly followed with number two eight minutes in. Kerry/Donegal battled back with the next three scores, points from Denise Dunnion, all three. The second arrived when Anita McKenna made an excellent catch on the edge of the square and fisted to the open Dunnion. The side was having hard work however moving the ball forward with Katherine O’Sullivan and Noelle Tierney defending excellently. Molly O’Rourke added a point before Brianna Tierney had their third goal. Again Molly O’Rourke was involved as she fed the wing forward on the run. Tierney lost control of the ball but then rifled it to the net soccer style on the half volley. While Sarah Grealis had a point in reply, Na Fianna ran off the final three points of the first stanza to give the side a 3-06 to 0-04 half time lead.

The second half opened with Kerry/Donegal on the comeback trail. It began with a Denise Dunnion goal when she was set free by Marie Cassels and she imitated Tierney from the first half by pulling on the rolling ball and slotting to the net. She followed with a point her fourth of the game before a mistake at the defensive end allowed Molly O’Rourke to capitalize and snatch Na Fianna’s fourth goal. Kerry/Donegal attacked again however and Denise Dunnion was again the scorer when she slotted over a free when she was fouled to the ground. It left her side trailing 1-06 to 4-06 but they were not worried as they continued to hunt in packs and battle across the field. On one such occasion the side moved the ball across the center filed line where Katherine O’Sullivan aggressively and was handed a yellow card and a sin bin of ten minutes. With 22 minutes still remaining their was plenty of time for a comeback and that’s what KD set about doing. Denise Dunnion had a brilliant score on the ten minute mark before she fired over a free after Fiona McHale was given a yellow card for the infraction. The second extra player did not last long however as almost immediately Jenny Moran was given a yellow at the other end for a foul. Mary O’Rourke did have a point from play for Na Fianna against the run of play and Kerry/Donegal stormed down the field again on attack. Five unanswered points from Clare Hannon,, three, Ali Kelly and Denise Dunnion had the side back within three with the defense stifling Na Fianna attacks with Benny Touhy getting a couple of clearances and the returning Moran, and Michelle McVann very prominent. With six minutes left on the clock the comeback was complete when Clare Hannon drove a long ball into Denise Dunnion and the brilliant corner forward shot to the net to level the tie at 2-14 to 4-08. The game looked poised to head for extra time akin to the other Ladies Semi final. The champions Na Fianna had other ideas. Fiona McHale and Noelle Tierney were involved when Kelly McCormack was set free and the native New Yorker fired her side back into the lead. Joanne McKenna followed with a brace with two minutes, the second and excellent score. Kerry/Donegal had two last attacks but they were cleared before Aine Dwyer had the clincher, a point from distance to finally secure the win.

A game of two half’s, Na Fianna dominated the first and then last five minutes of the second and it was enough against a game and courageous Kerry/Donegal. Katrina Lynch continues to excel at full back for the 2009 champions, Katherine O’Sullivan, and Noelle Tierney are brilliant going forward, the battle between Sully and Sarah Grealis was pivotal, O’Sullivan shaded it. Aine Dwyer had two important points while Fiona McHale played well; her sin bin took her out of the game in more ways than one. Brianna Tierney continues to grow at this level; her goal was an excellent conversion. Mary O’Rourke has secured her starting slot back; she definitely knows where the posts are. Kelly McCormack showed throughout with Joanne McKenna showing her experience in the closing moments. Molly O’Rourke had a quite game and still annexed 2-03. For Kerry/Donegal Jenny Moran did very well throughout and her marking job on Molly O’Rourke was important. The half back line was very active in the second half with Kathleen Hickey and Michelle McVann showing and harassing throughout. Catherina Brady came into the game in the second half, with Ali Kelly and Sarah Grealis having some quality contributions. Clare Hannon closed the game on fire with four serious scores with Denise Dunnion unbelievable in the corner, clinical.

The quest for glory will continue for these two sides after an extraordinary semi final on Sunday the 8^th of August. It had all the components of a classic. A Big lead for Fermanagh in the opening moments , a determined comeback from Cavan, before a trilling finish to regular time. Extra time followed with both sides going ahead before Fermanagh had an astonishing comeback with time running out to force a replay. The game was marshaled by Mags Doherty from Wexford who was here for the CYC tournament and she was part of an encounter that will be spoke of long into the future.

Fermanagh had a glorious start to the semi final as they jumped out into a 2-03 to 0-00 lead in the first ten minutes. The first goal arrived when Loretta Cunningham was fouled and she converted the penalty to the net and the same player had goal number two within minutes before points from Ashling O’Sullivan and Cunningham two, moved them into the solid lead early in the game. Cavan were working hard to regroup after the devastating start and they came back into the game when a long ball from Linda McKeon was harnessed by Rosie O’Reilly who was then fouled as she prepared to shoot on goal. Colleen Jordon stepped up and slotted to the net. A point by Rosie O’Reilly followed to make the scoreline 2-03 to 1-01 Cavan continued their recovery with three of the next four scores with O’Reilly again showing prominently while Jordon popped two frees over the lathe. The Fermanagh score was a huge one however as they added their third goal. It came from Ashling O’Sullivan when she burst in on goal and made no mistake. Maeve DeBurca followed with a point but Cavan had the best of the last five minutes as they got within four after points from Colleen Jordon and Linda McKeon, McKeon’s was a towering free kick, the last score before the break. Fermanagh then took a 3-04 to 1-06 to the locker rooms.

While Fermanagh had the first point of the second half, Cavan continued their revival and they had their second goal within a minute of the restart. It came from Rosie O’Reilly who took a pass from Colleen Jordon and shot low to the net. After another O’Reilly point Colleen Jordon had their thirds goal when she broke free and it preceded three further Cavan minors, Hynes, McKeon and Jordan tallied. With ten minutes gone Cavan had reversed the deficit to a 3-10 to 3-05 lead. They were now dominating the exchanges at the middle of the field and the inside line of Jordon and Reilly were taking the scores. Fermanagh fought back however and it began with a goal chance when Loretta Cunningham went on a long solo run but blasted wide of the right peg. Ashling O’Sullivan had a good point 12 minutes in and Erin Galligan followed with a brace before Cavan had a huge opportunity at the other end. Two goal bound shots were blocked by Clare McElroy but Cavan did finish the pressure with a Caitlin Hynes point. McElroy’s heroics lifted her side however. Saoirse Finnigan had Fermanagh back within one after Galligan set her up and points from Caroline Murphy and a brilliant Maeve DeBurca score, had their side back in front of a game that had huge ebbs and flows. A move that originated with DeBurca deep in the Fermanagh half with five minutes left in the half, had life when Erin Galligan took her pass and fed Caroline Murphy in the right corner. She picked out Aisling Gormley with a superb cross field pass and after an early fumble, Aisling Gormley shot to the net. Caroline Murphy followed with a point and now had a four point lead with less than a minute on the clock. Cavan were not finished however. They moved the ball up the field through the hands of Sheana Kiernan and Linda McKeon before Colleen Jordon received it on the left wing. She took on a defender and then blasted to the net. On the kickout Rosie O’Reilly was set free and she drove over the tying point. The teams had put 4-12 on the board each but they were not finished as the powers that be stated that extra time was needed. Two ten minute periods.

Fermanagh had the better of the opening ten as they outscored their opponents 3 to 2. Erin Galligan had the final effort, a brilliant score when she returned to the field after a break. They opened the second half with another score, a Caroline Murphy point that gave them a two point advantage and Fermanagh also forced Fiona McLoughlin to make a brilliant save when Aisling Gormley rifled a shot on goal that the keeper had to dive full length to turn away. With four minutes on the clock, Linda McKeon took a Caitlin Hynes pass and stormed up the field. Forty soloed yards later she flicked to a wide open Nicola Rogan who fired to the net. Colleen Jordon added a point to goive Cavan a two point lead in a huge turn of events. Fermanagh were not giving up on this day and they worked the ball deep into Breffni territory. Erin Galligan won possession and fired over the bar to make the deficit the minimum, she then battled to get the ball a minute later and shot long range skimming the bar for the equalizer with time running out.

A brilliant contest, Fermanagh will have no fears in the replay after this tie. Tracey Ann McCullough was excellent at the back with Siobhan McCourt, and Clare McElroy also outstanding. Maeve DeBurca was brilliant in the middle and Cavan had no answer to her surging runs. Caroline Murphy chipped in with 0-04 and was very good in possession, while Aisling O’Sullivan, Erin Galligan and Loretta Cunningham were outstanding in front of goal. The amount of ball that Galligan won at the end was critical. Of the bench Ashling Gormley and Saoirse Finnigan had telling contributions. Cavan had stars in this outing as well, none shone brighter than Rosie O’Reilly, who was fouled for the penalty, and shot 1-04, and Colleen Jordon who contributed 3-06. They both showed constantly and were not afraid to shoot in front of goal. Fiona McLoughlin made one brilliant save and kick outs were good. Ashley Callery courageously battled throughout with Galligan, Sheana Kiernan was prominent with Linda McKeon setting up two goal’s and scoring two points. Aimee Gomez also had a lot of action off the bench.

Na Fianna make statement in Midweek

Na Fianna 3-21 Cavan 2-10 Cavan and Na Fianna played off the last group game in the Ladies championship on Wednesday with Na Fianna getting the win in a high scoring contest. While the win made a statement in the division it did not change the seedings for the semi final as Cavan had already locked up the regular season crown and will face Fermanagh on Sunday the 8th at 10 am in the first semi final of the championship while Na Fianna will face off against Kerry/Donegal, a repeat of the titanic Anne Kearney final that went into extra time, at 11.30 am. Cavan and Na Fianna were very close in the opening twenty minutes with both sides getting some tremendous scores before they reached that point with Na Fianna leading 0-10 to 1-06. The goal for Cavan came from Caitlin Hynes when she grabbed the rebound of a Colleen Jordon shot that came back of the post and shot home. Molly O’Rourke had four of the Na Fianna points while Brianna Tierney had already garnered two from play. When Linda McKeon soloed forward 25 minutes in and blasted a trademark goal the Breffni girls were ahead 2-06 to 0-10. What was about to happen next however, could not have been foreseen. Na Fianna answered with 3-02 before the break in blistering style. Noelle Tierney, after a full field move started the Tsunami, with Fiona McHale, and Mary O’Rourke grabbing the other majors. Joanne McKenna and Brianna Tierney had the points. Cavan had four of the first six points to open the second half as they tried too mount a revival. While Joanne McKenna had the first point, Colleen Jordon and Linda McKeon answered before Rosie O’Reilly and Molly O’Rourke swapped scores. McKeon with the fourth of the mix had Cavan back within six at 3-13 to 2-10. While Na Fianna was not scoring at this time they did have four clear-cut goal chances. Molly O’Rourke hit the post, while Jeannine Rynne, Aine Dwyer and Kathrin O’Sullivan all went close also. The Cavan revival was short lived as Na Fianna had the final eight points of the game as they mounted a series of attacks that pushed Cavan back on their heels. to win in convincing style. Fiona McHale and Joanne McKenna were the leaders with two points a piece and their sides finished the regular season with a flourish. Outstanding for the winners were Noelle Tierney, Catherine O’Sullivan was attacking constantly down the wing, Katrina Lynch and Imelda Mullarkey also had prominent moments. Fiona McHale is a dynamo in the middle, while Brianna Tierney and Joanne McKenna added seven points combined in a scoring spree. They also did a lot of work in open play; McKenna is excellent at picking out the open teammate. Molly O’Rourke did not have it all her own way against Nicole Rogan but was tremendous with seven points to boot. Mary O’Rourke was a super addition off the bench. Cavan have work to do before the playoffs but were missing a couple of players in this one. Emma Clarke was quite but that was because of an injury. Aimee Gomez and Shauna Kiernan had some very good moments at the back while Fiona McLoughlin was very active with an excellent outing. Linda McKeon and Caitlin Hynes in the first half were even steven with their opponents, McKeon’s goal was brilliant. Colleen Jordon battled throughout while Nicola King also did well at times. Two days before the CYC tournaments begins the Enniskillen Cuchulainns played the amalgamated Long Island Gaels and New York Celtics. The Cuchulainns are a cross community u16 team drawn from all over Fermanagh and have been a regular at the CYC over the past number of years. This years team are proving to be a real talented bunch and started their own preparations with an exceptional preformance against the Celtic Gaels in Eisenhower Park winning 3-08 to 1-05 in a closely fought match.

While the teams went into the break with a goal between them, it was a second half surge that secured the win for Na Fianna. They outscored their rivals 3-10 to 1-03 in that time with a two goal outburst from stars Fiona McHale and Molly O'Rourke critical. Kerry/Donegal ad used a strong closing period of the first half to pull within three but they had little in way of answers when Na Fianna finally got their impressive team moving.
The first half had a series of scoring waves to its story line. KD had two points from the impressive Sarah Grealis to open the game but seven of the next eight scores to catapult into the lead. It included a goal from Jeannine Rynne after twelve minutes when Mary O'Rourke was involved in the buildup. Molly O'Rourke, two, Fiona McHale, two and Mary O'Rourke had points in the mix and by the 21 st minute Na Fianna had a 1-06 to 0-03 lead. Kerry/Donegal responded by closing out the first half with a scoring flurry. Clare Hannon snatched a goal while Catherina Brady fired over a point to cancel out a Fiona McHale effort to leave just three between the sides as the half arrived. Na Fianna added to their lead with scores from substitute Joanne McKenna to open the second half before another Molly O'Rourke point. Donegal responded with three of the next four points with Clare Hannon, Catriona Brady and Jennifer Moran all scoring but they had a glorious goal chance that went a begging with twelve minutes gone. Denise Dunnion was released on goal by Brady but her low shot screamed a yard wide of the left post. It was a let off that Na Fianna would punish them for. Kelly McCormack had a point from play before McHale and Molly O'Rourke put back to back goals together to push the lead out even further 3-11 to 1-07. Clare Hannon did grab KD's second goal with ten minutes left but it proved to be their final score as Na Fianna added a further 1-05 to their tally with Captain Aine Dwyer getting goal number four.
Jesse Garcia was very impressive at the back for the winners with Katrina Lynch, and newcomer Noelle Tierney also prominent. The O'Dwyer's dominated the middle of the park with Fiona following her strong showing in the Anne Kearney final with another hour of powerful catching and play. Fiona McHale moved to the middle for the second half and had a very impressive hour in her first game of the year. Katrina Sullivan despite not scoring did a lot of quality running up and down the wing, with Molly O'Rourke having an excellent outing. Joanne McKenna and Kelly McCormack had important contributions off the bench. For Kerry/Donegal Benny Touhy had a good outing and could not be faulted for the goals. Louise Lilly battled throughout the hour and did well when moved to Molly O'Rourke late on in the game. Catherina Brady, Anita McKenna, Sarah Grealis who was excellent and started the game on fire, Clare Hannon and Ali Kelly also had some very good moments.

On Saturday Rockland GAA hosted the annual Dennis McHugh memorial competition for U8's. This was the first official competition on the new field and was a fantastic blitz exceptionally well run and organised by the Rockland club with nearly 200 players getting loads of games on 6 pitches. The standard of football was a real tribute to the hard work put in by coaches and parents throughout the year and we hope to see everyone playing again at the CYC next weekend .

Field of Dreams opening goes down a storm!

Friday 23rd July will go down as a historic day for not only New York county board but for the GAA as an organisation with the opening of the Field of Dreams in Rockland . Great credit must go to the Rockland club and in particular the commitment of the Field Development Committee for their vision and hard work on behalf of the club. The event has been in preparation for years as was evidenced by the smooth running of the show on the night. Every one was catered for with food and drinks with music running throughout the evening. The first official game on the pitch between Rockland and the Celtics was promising to be a real cracker in the first minutes but the spectacular lightning show alas put a stop to the evenings football. Afterwards it was under the marquee for entertainment provided by Katie Linnane and Erin Loughran followed by music from The Wild Rovers, who ensured the music and dancing continued into the wee hours of the morning!

Foundation Award and Cul Camps in New Haven

Last week the New Haven Club ran their annual cul camp and held the first ever foundation football coaching award in the club house . Over 20 new coaches attended the course and the feedback from both tutors and coaches was great. The cul camps continued for the week with skills, games in hurling , football for all involved. Many thanks to the New Haven club for running such a fantastic week and for being so accomadating to our coaches.

After the rain on Monday the New Haven Cul Camps finally got some sun today. Over 20 kids and coaches enjoyed the sunshine on tuesday with some fun games , hurling and football skillls and some crab football. Everybody is enjoying the craic down at the new field with special thanks to the New Haven club for catering for all the coaches and players. Big thanks to the new coaches James , Jason and Cameron and our Irish experts Seamus and Cian for all the help.

Shannon Gaels Field Day

Saturday 7/17/ Shannon Gaels hosted their very own Field day and a great day was had by all. The event ran from 12 noon to the wee hours but it was obvious to all that weeks of preparation had gone into the event. Live music ran through the day while face painting and fun games entertained our youngest gaels. Barbeques , drinks a bouncy castle and slide entertained the young and not so young alike. Throughout the day football , camoige and hurling games provided an indication of just how much hard work is being put in on the ground in the Queens club. The U8 blitz proved to be a real thriller with the final game ending up a draw with end to end football entertaining all. A camoige blitz , u12 game , auld vs wee boys games raised cheers and laughs throughout the day. Many thanks to the Rockland and st brigids clubs for providing the opposition on the day. We are looking forward to the next field day already!

Foundation courses @ Shannon Gaels and Gaelic Park

This weekend over 40 coaches undertook the foundation award in Gaelic Park and the Frank Golden Park. There was great feedback from all the coaches and lots of new ideas were created and shared out amongst the coaches. The course was tutored by GDO Simon Gillespie and by Longford's own Cian O'Brein out on sabbatical from Ireland. Many thanks to all invovled for participating and catering for our coaches.

Our presentation day at the Rockland and Gaelic Park Cul Camps this year and each child was presented with a cul camp jersey , medal and kit bag. On the day we had loads of fun races , games and skills . Many thanks to all our parents , coaches and players making the week a fantastic achievement for New York GAA. Rockland GAA cul camp: TV time ahead of Field of Dreams opening

Early morning involved 10 different stations with agility, skills and games being developed by our Cul Coaches. Evening time involved a skills tests for our older players and more fun games for our younger members.

The cul camps kicked off today in Gaelic Park with a record 165 kids attending the camp in the bronx. Taoiseach Brian Cowen called in to see the good work been done by the New York board and was very impressed by young olivia smith who was wearing an Offaly jersey. With over 20 coaches involved the day ran smoothly and all involved enjoyed being part of the summer camp experience.

In Rockland over 85 kids attended the camp under the leadership of Camp director Paul Rowley. With 8 stations and groups the day ran like clockwork as all involved got to participate in a variety of skills, drills and fun games. Many thanks to all the parents also who helped out on the day.

Rockland Girls cause a storm in the North West!

Rockland's U10 girls completed their undefeated tour of Ireland in Ballyshannon , Donegal against the Aodh Ruadh girls last saturday. Having previously

defeated Dromore of county Tyrone and Bundoran of Donegal the girls gave a great preformance in the driving rain. The Ballyshannon girls were exceptionally well drilled under the tutelage of Aodh Ruadh's answer to Sonny and Cher Bernie and Slyvester Maguire . The Aodh Ruadh club have a vcry strong connection to New York football with Rockland U10 girls manager , a former Ballyshannon resident , Pat Mc Govern now the chairman of the Gaelic For Girls programme. Niall Mc Cready last years Aodh Ruadh captain is a former player with Donegal New York and the New York Senior Football team. Brian Mc Caffery now plays his football with Donegal New York while Katie Flood is playing for the summer with Na Fianna. Newly appoint NY GDO Simon Gillespie is also a member of the club so it was great for all involved to be part of the occasion. Many thanks to the club for the hospitality provided afterwards. New York year long effort rewarded

Ballymccarbery, county waterford is the home of ladies club football and is the most succesful club in the history of Ladies Gaelic Football. 10 All Ireland Clubs , 54 All Stars , 7 All Ireland championships backboned by the club to name a minority of their achievements. The club encapsulate the community ethos of the GAA and most remarkable of all is how they managed all this without any so called modern facilities or a large player pool. There success is a testament to the hard work an character of many people in particular the Ryan Family.

This time last year Bally Mc beat the ladies team by 1 point in a thriller. NY led by 8 points at half time but just could not stop the BallyMc girls clawing their way back into the game with goals. That memory is still fresh in the memory of most of the NY girls and today they are out for revenge. The ball is thrown in an immediately NY win it and hit the ball in first time to Courtney Trainor who sticks it over the bar. Moments later the ball is in the back of the net after Courntey again races past the Bally Mc defence and sticks it in the net. But its not just in the full forward where the damage is being done Amanda Mc Govern and Anne Dunleavy are sticking to their markers like glue while Mary Ann Coleman is getting on the end of every breaking ball. Molly Boyle is playing out of her skin and hits two points in the first half. The goals start raining in and it looks like its going to be a long afternoon for the Bally girls. Ashley Brophy gets a brace of goals in the half while Molly and Mary Ann get the others. The score at half time reads 5-09 to no score.

The Ballymccarbery girls come back into it in the second half and manage to win the second half by 1-04 to 0-05 showing really resilience and fighting spirit. Courtney Trainor doesnt take the foot off the pedal though and finishes the game with 1-10 including a spectacular effort with her left foot. New Yorks subs make a real impact on the game with Keely Mc Feely and Catriona Rafferty putting in a big few minutes. The final score on the day was 5-14 to 1-04. Phil Sheridan was delighted with the team preformance especially the first half blitz and found it very difficult afterwards to pick and MVP and in the end could not pick between Ashley Callery who had a stormer at centre and Courtney Trainor who finished with 1-10 so gave a joint MVP. Speaking g after the game joint MVP Courtney Trainor was delighted with the teams and her own preformance "Im really happy with how all the girls played were delighted to have won that game."

After the game the Ballymccarbery club gave a tour of their new hall with an indoor pitch facility , gym and dining area. The food on show all co ordinated by Catherine Ryan is spectacular as is the effort made by the helpers. Speeches and presentations are made by both clubs and it turns out to be another memorable day for NY ladies GAA.

Day Five: New York U16 v Old Parish U16 7/8/2010

New York u16s battle hard to earn a win against Old Parish

The U16s earned a hard fought win over local team Old Parish in Ballymccarbery with the result of the game being marred by a knee injury to MVP on the day Andrea Mc Glade. New York played a great first half of football with a fantastic top corner finish from Tiffany Griffin in her first game at full forward. Colleen Wall did well after being introduced as an early substitute while Maeve Power showed up well with a fantastic point while Mc Glade was the star of the show making runs from all over and getting two points in the first half. Cecilia popped up with two points to make the half time score 2 -05 to 0-01 to the New Yorkers.

The second half degenerated into a real dog fight with Old Parish taking the game to the New Yorkers New York were best served by Michelle Finan who made a superb effort throughout the game while the Tara's Flanagan and Nevin tackled really well when the going got tough. Towards the end of the half as NY were holding on to a slender lead. Disaster in the second half for NY as their brightest light on the day Andrea Mc Glade was taken off midway through the half with a knee injury. Andrea was well looked after by the Ballymccarbery club and by the doctors in Clonmel. NY were well served throughout the day by Nora Kilkenny in goal who looked really assured and Laura O'Sullivan whose catching was fantastic on a very slippery and wet day.

Day Four evening: Mass, Waterford Crystal , Kayaking and a few songs!

After the training and team talk it was down to a really enjoyable evening with 130 Mass in Folly Church said by Fr. Melody. Cecilia said a reading and afterwards Father Melody spoke with the girls prayers were offered for the intentions of all involved and for the repose of the soul of Fred Judd father of group member Tim and grandfather to Bridget who had recently passed.

Afterwards it was down to Waterford Crystal for a look around the world famous glass factory before heading out for an evening of fun in Dunmore East. Firstly the girls went Kayaking around the pier before the Spinnaker bar served a lovely barbeque for everyone after the Germany Spain game. Afterwards a sing song with ballads provided by three Brophy's Noelle, Eugene and Mairtin before coaching guru Simon Gillespie stole the show with a rousing rendition of the Hills of Donegal bringing tears to several eyes! All in all a great nights fun and enjoyment.

Day Four on Tour: Davy Fitz and the WIT boys 7/7/2010

Day four on tour with the NY ladies and the lads from the WIT campus took the u16 and u18 girls teams for a training session focus mostly on ball handling skills and tactical play. Many thanks to Robin , Conor, Michael and Thomas for taking two great sessions the girls are improving all the time and hopes are high for a big preformance in Bally McCarbery tomorrow evening.

During the session current Waterford senior manager and 3 time All Star Davy Fitzgerald came in and gave an inspirational team talk to the girls telling his own personal story and how he achieved so much in spite of several setbacks. He also spoke and challenged the girls about their own aspirations. Davy stayed around for the rest of the session talking with the girls and mentors and wishing the team well before heading off to plot Cork's forthcoming downfall on sunday. Best of luck to the Deise Boys and Camogs this weekend!

New York record first win on Tour!

Fourth times a charm for the New York Ladies !

After four attempts at trying the New York ladies recorded their first win on tour with a heart stopping one point victory over the Tramore Senior Ladies team. Trailing by six points at the interval the ladies had it all to do in the second half but goals from Noelle Brophy and Ciara Griffin earned New York a deserved 2-07 to 2-06 victory.

NY started the game playing into a howling breeze after a day running up an down the WIT campus hall and surfing in the atlantic ocean and from the off it was clear that this was not going to be a half hearted affair. Maeve Power was keeping everything at bay and catching several high balls until a 17th minute effort slipped between her fingers and into the net to give the Tramore girls a four point lead. Kelly Mc Cormack made some fine catches and passes from the Tramore kickout while Caroline Mc Brien was contesting everything around the middle and got three turnovers in the first half alone. Courtney Trainor and Molly Boyle got the NY scores before the break to leave the half time scores NY 0-02 to Tramore 2-02.

Six points down at half time and things looked bleak for the ladies the wind seemed to be dropping as did some of the girls heads and it seemed to be the same story all over again but a fine Noelle Brophy goal who ran 60 yards to get on the end of a ball and hit a low bullet into the net led the NY revivial. New York tackled magnificently from numbers 1-15 with the forwards getting in several blocks to ensure the Tramore defence could not get out easily. Video evidence has been requested by the CCCC to ensure that there was not actually 3 Ashlene Brophy's out around the field as she seemed to be everywhere one second getting a tackle in the full back line the next she seemed to be linking up with the forwards. Ciara Griffin finished a fine mover into the back of the net after a fantastic turnover by team captain Ashley Callery down in the half back line. Tramore were not finished though and tagged on two more scores to ensure a tight finish but New York hung on to ensure a memorable victory for the girls.

After the final whistle the Tramore club very graciously provided a lovely feed for the New York delegation and with some speeches also from Ladies Development Officer George Young and chief executive of WIT Eugene Mc Kenna. Eugene Brophy NY tour coordinator made presentations on behalf of the New York ladies board and a great night was had by all.

Speaking after the game New York MVP Ashley Brophy was delighted with her teams preformance " I though we played really well together as a team and we put in a big effort in the second half. There is a great team spirit amongst the girls and that really helped us through."

New York Ladies battle it out with Comeragh

The NY u16's had a tough encounter with a really determined Comeragh Rangers outfit whose first half goal blitz was enough to see them through the game in very wet conditions in Tramore. The frightened pace and skill of the Comeragh girls just proved too much for the NY girls with the corner forwards sharing a five goal first half tally between them. New York tried hard throughout the half with Bridget Judd , Catriona Rodgers and Tara Flanagan really battling to prevent further scores from the Comeragh girls.

With the aid of a few substitutions New York came back into the game Bridget Widenhammer is proving to be a terrific find for the team and her hard work throughout the second half was one of the main reasons for New York's terrific comeback. Though being much behind on the scoreboard the girls managed to come out on top and really restore some pride to the blue, red and white. Lauren Mc Mahon linked up well for an NY goal scored by Courtney Trainor. MVP on the day for New York was Bridget Judd whose blistering runs down the line and tenacious defence in the first half earned her the award from team manager Phil Sheridan.

Day three on Tour: Surfing and Running

Day three on the tour and the NY ladies got down to the real enjoyable part of GAA life the dreaded fitness test. The WIT boys put the girls through their paces testing out their 20m pace , sit and reach total , agility, resting heart rate, RAST scores and finally the scourge of the modern GAA player the bleep test. Many thanks to Robyn and the boys for getting the best out the girls. Some fabulous efforts made by the girls in particular Andrea Mc Glade and Catriona Rafferty.

From then it was onto Tramore for a surfing lesson in the atlantic. Many thanks to the Paul and co at the surf school for a great evenings fun. From there it was on to the Tramore local grounds and the evenings challenge games vs Comeragh u16 and the Tramore Senior ladies....

Meath run out comfortable winners

New York came out second best against an exceptional Meath outfit in the second game in Rathoath. With a final score of 2-11 to 1-05 there was no doubt that New York had been taught a footballing lesson by the Royal ladies. Meath had 2-06 on the board before New York got their opening score from Courtney Trainor in the 22nd minute. Molly Boyle added a second score just in injury time of the first half to leave ten point between the teams at the interval.

Trainor ran in for her second score in the 36th minute before Molly "Melandra" Boyle added another shortly after. Meath were content to shoot for points in the second half with 5 different girls getting scores in the second half. The match had to be temporarily interrupted following a downpour midway between the half. Following this Ciara Griffin got a great goal into the bottom left corner and then added a another point in the 56th minute to finish the scoring and leave the game 2-11 to 1-05 in favour of the Royal county.

MVP Amanda Mc Govern " were a bit disappointed with the result but its a great experience for us to play against the top teams."

New York and Meath play out a cracker in Rathoath

Just off the plane from America the New York U16 ladies played Meath Development squad in Rathoath at 12.30 monday morning. The meath girls eventually ran out deserved 4-12 to 2-15 winners but NY had an opportunity to steal a draw with a last minute penalty. Meath began the game at a ferocious pace and were four points up after 10 minutes. The scoreline could have been even worse but for a great pair of hands provided by the New York goalie and match MVP Maeve Power and blocks from Tiffany Griffin and Lauren Mc Mahon. Kelly Mc Cormack was unlucky to hit the post after 10 minute and that brought about a revival in the NY ladies fortune with Courtney Trainor and Mc Cormack posting scores to leave two points between the teams with the wind in meaths favour . The meath full forward then posted two goals in five minutes to put a gap between the teams but Courtney Trainor got a superb score with a tremendous run at last years All Ireland u16 champions defence before sticking the ball over the bar again moments before half time to leave the scores 2-06 to 0-04 at the interval.

After the break New York through everything at the Meath girls with Courtney Trainor getting a score right after the throw in before Noelle Brophy charged the length of the field to stick two in a minute before Trainor added her second of the half. Nora Kilkenny had a shot cleared off the line and it looked like the All ireland champions might be in for a shock before the Meath Full forward again tapped in two goals in the 37th and 41st minute to put another gap between the teams. Kelly Mc Cormack replied for the vistiors right after, following a great ball from centre back Amanda Mc Govern . Courntey Trainor added her sixth point right after. Meath sensed a revival and posted four points in the next five minutes with the two wing forwards sharing two points each. New York finished the game with a goal spree with Megan King getting a brace of goals while Colleen Wall added a magnificent top corner finish and Catriona Rafferty added her own score to leave the game at 4-11 to 2-15 going into the third minute of injury time when New York were awarded a penalty for an off the ball foul to tie the game but the penalty was struck just narrowly over the crossbar to leave the final score meath 2-15 NY 2-12.

Speaking after the game the NY manager Phil Sheridan was happy with the effort put in by the girls " I am happy enough with the way we played in the first game on tour , Meath were an exceptional team and you could see in them the reason they are All Ireland Champions, we still have a lot of work to do but we'll get there."

New York MVP Maeve Power was happy enough with the game " I'm happy with the girls preformance I thought we tried really hard. For a lot of us its our first time in Ireland and were really enjoying it."

As the gates close around Celtic Park and the bus, trains and planes depart from Derry, Feile 2010 draws to a close. Everyone in the New York board is very grateful to the Derry County board, Feile Committee Limavady and Dungiven clubs for hosting the teams and ensuring everyone parents, players, supporters had a wonderful time in Derry. To the host families for taking such great care of the players and to the club personnel for helping feed , train , coach , transport, clean up after our teams another word of thanks. For the host venue clubs Kevin Lynches , Castledawson , Lavey a big thank you. To all teams participating in the competition and in particular to the two teams who beat our girls and boys and who both went onto win the competition congratulations and well done. The event has left everyone involved with memories they will never forget and to the organisers of the event we would just like to express our thanks.

Speaking after the final whistle of the girls game Joe Mc Girl a member of the ladies board expressed his own views on the running of the event. " I thought that the host families were tremendous, along with the local clubs . The independence they allowed our teams was fabulous every one had a fantastic time. It was a great opportunity to play in a premier facility like Celtic Park. It was an amazing opportunity and we are delighted we got to meet the president of the GAA amongst others. We are already looking forward to Cork next year we hope to get even more new families involved in the Feile experience to give them the experience of the community building effect the GAA has. It has given our players a whole new reason to play Gaelic Football and is a great way to promote the game in America. We now look forward to playing against each other in the CYC and we hope that event runs as well as the Derry Feile 2010."

All Ireland Feile Final: New York Ladies vs Tinryland Bennekerry (Carlow)

All Ireland Final Day in Feile in Celtic Park sunday morning 10;25pm, just before throw in and there is a palpable buzz of expectation amongst the large crowd. All week the expectation has been high amongst the New York supporters everyone knows it players, management , spectators. Even the opposition are talking up this team and New York are raging hot favourites to win the title. Bennekerry, however have put up huge scorelines in every game they have played. They won their semi final by 15 points and won one of their group games by 47 points 11-14 to no score. This New York team has got the experience necessary however, Mairead Hynes is playing in her record equaling fifth consecutive Feile and is this years vice captain. Johanna Levine has played in 4 feiles and Mairead Ruane is in her third year. The New York faithful are quietly confident after watching their team concede only 10 points in their six games so far and racking up some amazing scorelines. Bennekerry win the toss but elect to play against the wind, going in the face of traditional Feile wisdom to always play with the breeze.

The game begins at a frantic pace with the Carlow girls winning the first ball delivering it in quickly to the forwards who win a free on the edge of the 45. The ball is delivered in quickly into the full forwards and squeezed into the bottom corner of the New York net. The Carlow girls, though playing against the breeze begin to take a foothold in the NY half and in the second minute Shannon Hughes clears a goal bound effort to the safety of midfield. In the 3rd minute Nichole Denison makes a point blank save from and the ball finishes up going harmlessly wide as the entire NY crowd breath a collective sigh of relief. NY get back into the game and Colleen Chrzanowski gets on the ball and delivers it to Mairead Hynes and from then into Johanna Levine who narrowly puts it wide. Bennekerry add a point and things are looking bleak for the New Yorkers. However, the deadlock is broken in the 9th minute as Caitlin Mc Kenna bundles the ball into the net following a scramble in the square. Quick thinking from a free from Mairead Hynes to Mairead Ruane leads to a point and two more narrow misses from the ladies left a point between the teams. Shannon Hughes and Margaret Brady were dominating the Bennekerry full forward line with Hughes getting two turnovers in the space of a minute. New York win a free on the edge of the 20 yard line and Mairead Hynes steps up to take it, looking to the world as if she is going to put it 20 yards over the bar, but manages to deftly chip it over the Carlow defence into the net to to put the ladies a goal ahead at half time leading 2-01 to 1-01.

Half time amongst the supporters and there are worried faces amongst the New York crowd. Will the one goal lead into the Gale be enough ? Less than a minute into the second half and the Bennekerry full forward puts a point on the board. Again Bennekerry get in possession in a scoring area and only for a magnificent block by Shannon Hughes the Carlow girls would have gone into the lead. Another Carlow attack and Margaret Brady leaps over five players to intercept a ball , breaks the first tackle and lays it off to Mary Kate Lisi. 3 minutes gone and New York are on the ropes, Nicole Denison makes another point blank save and the ball goes out for a 45. Another Brady turnover and the ball is released quickly down to Heather Durkin who is bearing down on goal and fires a low shot but the keeper does just enough to save the ball. More pressure on the New York line and the Bennekerry midfield launch a huge highing dropping ball into the New York square the ball breaks and falls to the corner forward who taps over. One point between the teams and a little over 3 minutes remaining. Johanna Levine wins a ball she has absolutley no right to win on the edge of the D but the resulting free just trails to the left and wide. Hughes gets in another great tackle and delivers it off with two minutes left on the clock. 30 seconds on the clock and New York have one hand on the trophy but Bennekerry aren't finished yet and with 14 minutes 50 seconds on the clock launch a huge effort over the bar to tie the game and bring it to extra time. Score after full time Bennekerry 1-04 NY 2-01

First half of extra time and one things for sure no one is leaving this game early. Johanna Levine is having an almighty tussle with the Carlow full back and finally manages to break free from her to bear down on goal, in the third minute of ET, when the corner back sweeps across to turnover the ball just as Levine is about to pull the trigger. 4;30 gone into the half and disaster for New York, as a ball breaks down the field into the Bennekerry full forward, who fires the ball into the NY net to put a goal between the teams. Carlow have another goal disallowed for a throw ball and it looks like NY will have a mountain to climb in the second half.

Into the gale in the second half of extra time and as tensions rise the referee is earning the wrath of the aggrieved NY supporters who feel that Mairead Hynes is clearly been fouled instead the free is given against her. Mairead Ruane who must have run the equivelant of a marathon throughout Feile is penailsed for fouling the ball and its clear the momentum is with Bennekerry. The NY ladies throw the kitchen sink at Bennekerry but it just isn't going for them. Johanna Levine seems to block the Full back's kick with her head, epitomising this team's spirit but still nothing moving. Injuries to both teams and it seems the clock is on double time as the game slides near full time. Bennekerry win and point a free to put four between the teams. The final whistle blows and its all over for the ladies.

NY make the finals!

The ladies are through to the All Ireland Feile Final after a close encounter with Clann Na Gael from county Roscommon in Castledawson saturday evening at 430pm. A first half goal from Johanna Levine following a long delivery from midfield gave New York their opening goal with Mairead Ruane adding a point in the 10th minute to leave the half time scores 1-01 to no score.

Clann Na Gael were quickest to respond from the break with a score in the 16th minute. Caitlin Mc Kenna bundled in another goal in the 25th minute to leave the scores 2-02 to 0-01 with five minutes left. New York seemed to be home and dry but a goal from the Rossie girls gave New York a shock. 30 seconds later Clann added another score to leave the scores 2-02 to 1-02 with 4 minutes left , this was turning into a real nail bitter and with 3 minutes left Clann were awarded a free 21 yards out and a goal seemed to be on but the centre forward elected to tip it over the bar to leave a two point advantage with two minutes left. New York put in a great defensive effort for the last number of minutes to ensure a victory and progression to the All Ireland Final in Celtic Park on Sunday.

Heartbreak for New York in Lavey

Erin’s Own Lavey may be the spiritual home of Derry club football and home to one of the greatest ever Ulster club teams but for New York GAA it will only provide bitter memories for Tom Bennetts men. The fact that this one of the most exciting games in the competition to date and arguably the best football of the competition to date will be of no consolation to New York. Mayo teams are renowned for their big preformances in semi finals and this side followed in that tradition. The empire state men began this game as though they meant to finish it in five minutes and they nearly did given the onslaught on the Mayo team’s goal . Intensity was the buzz word from the onset and the New Yorkers played 20 minutes of this game at a level that no one would be able to cope with them. In the end however, Moy Davitts goal in the 22nd minute proved the difference between the teams.

From the off New York took a foothold into the game Gerry O’Sullivan at full back was catching high balls 10 feet from the ground in the slipperiest of conditions following the downpour that preceded the games. The goalie must have had super glue on his hands to hold on to some of the skyscraper balls that were dropping in on his goals. Conor Cassidy opened up the scores with a right footed effort from 25 yards that settled the New York nerves. James Linnane got in a great block on his opposite number in the 7th minute to set up Joe Mc Cormack who delivered into Cassidy who just narrowly pulled his shot to the left and wide. Moy Davitts however were made of sterner stuff than anything New York had faced previously having beaten Sean Dolans of Derry by 31 points , Claudy from Derry by 16 points and the much fancied Cullyhanna team by 9 points. The Davitts full back was marshalling NY danger man Ronan Curry Well and the two Davitt corner backs were fearless to a fault putting their heads on some occasions where you wouldn’t leave a shovel. However Conor Cassidy was able to break the Davitts resistance with a superb ball from Ciaran Bennett. Seamie Lawless added another point after Ronan Curry had gotten the better of his marker and laid a clever ball off to Lawless who struck the ball sweetly over the bar. In the next play right on the 13th minute New York smacked the underside of the crossbar and for a fleeting moment it seemed it might be all too easy for the boys. Davitts pulled what seemed was going to be a consolation score in the 14th minute to leave the scores as half time loomed 1-03 to 0-01. As word began to filter through from Castledawson that the girls were in control against their opponents it seemed that the dream of an unprecedented New York Feile double was on the cards.

Half time in the New York camp and there was no talk of the demands of three games in one day, no talk of excuses just more of the same – intensity. However the game turned on its head just inside the 16th minute when the Davitts number 15 drilled in a low shot past the keeper. Now it was game on and the Davitts players seemed to grow in confidence as they trailed by two points. Once again in the 18th minute they managed to work the ball past the New York midfield and into the full forward line who shot the ball just passed the post as the New York following breathed a collective sigh of relief. By now the Erin’s Own ground crowd was swelling as people emerged from the car park , inside the hall and indeed outside the grounds to witness the unfolding spectacle. Again Moy Davitts got within striking distance of the New York net but the keeper pulls off a finger tip save to send the ball over the bar for a point to the mayo men. It was clear the tide had turned and now the mayo men had their tails up. Time and again the New York boys were guilty of wasting possession and hitting balls out the sideline. Disaster for New York then in the 22nd minute as the Davitts midfielder bore down on goal and drilled it past the New York defence. Davitts again added another point from range and it seemed that at three points down and seven left the NY boys were going to need something special and they got it as Joe Mc Cormack stepped up to the plate and delivered with an inspirational point from 35 yards after the New York half backs worked the ball in quickly. Two points between the teams and another long ball was launched into the NY full forward line Kieran Bennett won a 50 / 50 ball from his marker in the corner and then headed straight for goal knowing that time was against the New Yorkers he was confronted by the Davitts full back who he duly turned and launched a piledriver past the keeper and just off the top left upright. It was the be the closest the boys would get to All Ireland glory. Davitts turned the ball over from the resulting possession and added another score to put three between the teams. In the last minute of normal time Joe McCormack got on the ball and launched a ball inside to the full forwards but the move was broken up by the outstanding Davitts Full back. To rub salt in the wounds with nearly the last play of the match Davitts won a free on the 22 to put 4 between the teams. As the final whistle blew it was obviously a case of an opportunity lost for the boys but no doubt they will be back in the blue and white before too long.

Goals from Caitlyn Mc Kenna, Catherine Treacy and a brace each Mairead Hynes and Johanna Levine set New York on their way to another victory. Emma Mc Girl, Emily Russell , Margaret Brady , Caitlyn Mc Kenna, Margaret Hynes, Catherine Treacy and Mary Ann Coleman all got points to ensure another shutout for the ladies.

Ladies survive Kileavy battle to progress to semi finals

New York survived a scare from the Armagh Champions to progress through to the semi finals in Kevin Lynch Park. Kileavy were even ahead of the ladies in the initial stages of the game as the girls conceded their first scores of the Feile Championship a remarkable achievement in over 60 minutes of football without conceding a score. The ladies response was instant to the Kileavy threat with Margaret Brady producing a great score after a well worked move starting with Mairead Hynes. The ladies followed this with a siege on the Kileavy goal with Margaret Brady bundling in an effort from 6 yards. Mairead Ruane was on fire around the middle of the park and someone seemed able to get near her as soon as she got on the ball and she highlighted her class with a superb finish into the goals in the 8th minute. Great play around the middle of the park from MVP Kerilynn O’Keffe, who had just celebrated her birthday in Dungiven on Thursday evening, led to New Yorks 3rd goal another Levine Classic who is surely in the running for Feile top scorer in both the boys and girls sections, Mairead Hynes took the sensible option and pointed from a penalty moments after. Heather Durkan popped up with another goal to add to her tally in the championship. However this was not to be another rout for the girls and Kileavy got a well worked score themselves from the centre forward and another point just before the interval to leave the scores 4-02 to 1-02 at half time.

Once again the New York girls distinguished themselves all around the park with Shannon Hughes getting in a great block to thwart another Kileavy attack, Mary Kate Lisi was sidestepping anything that came near her while Kerilyn was reading the game like she had the script in her hand judging every pass the Kileavy midfield tried to make inside to their forwards. Mairead Hynes hit another goal into the bottom left while Johanna Levine fisted in a great goal after Catherine Treacy did all the donkey work in the corner. Overall another team performance from the city slickers with Caitlin Mc Kenna getting 1-02 ,Nichole Dineson doing a great job in goals with a safe pair of hands while Colleen Chzanowski must have covered every blade of grass cover tackling and providing support for any offensive play in the match. MVP Kerilynn O’Keffe over for her first time in Ireland “We really made a big effort in this game; we really want to get through to the semi finals and go on to the final. Personal highlight for me in this game was my catch in the middle of the park and getting the ball into the forwards.”

First half display enough for NY against the Pearses.

New York feile boys recorded an impressive 4-06 to no score victory over the Kilrea Pearses in Limavady. New York cruised through the second half following a virtuoso performance from the New York offence. New York opened the scoring in the 3rd minute following a great catch by Michael Murphy who fed the ball inside to match day MVP Ronan Currie who made no mistake from the edge of the square right into the Kilrea net. Currie added his second, moments after, with a top corner effort from 15 yards before Joe Mc Cormack scored a great point after fielding a kick out from the Kilrea goalie. The play of the game was the next score from New York as Pete Rogers took a great catch round the middle of the field over the heads of the entire Kilrea midfield, found Currie with a direct ball who flicked on for Kieran Bennett to finish into the top corner which earned applause from all members of the crowd including the large Kilrea following. Joe Mc Cormack scored again following some real wizardry by Kieran Bennett in the bottom corner of the field, Bennett then managed to find Mc Cormack with an inside ball who duly pointed. James Lenanne then got his name on the scoreboard with a nice point from 30 yards. Mc Cormack then beat several tacklers and found the on fire Currie who raised a white flag with an effort from 20 yards. Just at the interval Joe Mc put a free over from a tricky angle to leave the half time scores New York 4-06 to Kilrea 0-00.

Kilrea selector Terence Mc Williams later revealed that there were stern words at half time from the management and this resulted in a different attitude from the Kilrea boys in the second half who kept the NY boys to one score in the second half due in most part to inspirational leadership of Kilrea centre back, Rory O’Connell. NY were firmly in control of the ball in the second half but found it hard to put scores on the board with their solitary score coming from Hat Trick Hero Ronan Currie who blasted the ball into the Kilrea net following another great catch by Murphy. Speaking after the game Currie praised the efforts of his team mates and was delighted with his own personal tally of 3-01.”We were well pumped for the game and that led to today’s performance , we’re looking forward to our next game and we hoping to come home with the Championship.” After the game former GAA president Joe Mc Donagh praised the Kilrea Pearses for their second half performance and gave credit to the management and players of the New York squad as a testament to the hard work been done for the GAA overseas.

New York boys tame the Wolfhounds

The New York feile boys team showed true grit and determination as they produced a second half performance against a strong gale that will give great encouragement to the supporters and management of the team. The match finished 4-06 to 1-02 but the scoreline does not reflect the dogged attitude required to win this match displayed by the boys. With 6 points separating the teams at half time the New York boys had it all to do in the second half facing into a strong gale blowing right into their faces. A Ciaran Bennett goal near the interval had given New York a vital lead but now it seemed Limavady would take control given the strength of the wind. However great teams play their best football when it is needed most and that is exactly what this NY team did. Ronan Curry scythed through the Limavady defence and rifled a shot top corner to put some breathing space between the teams. Danger loomed for NY when the Limavady full forward found himself in space bearing down on goal but Pat Guerin was equal to the task and made a great save. Brian Kernan was very unlucky to only come away with a point after his effort hit the crossbar and went over but he was then very fortunate later on when his high effort ended up in the back of the Limavady net after it bounced over the keeper. Murphy in defence showed great bravery when his block from the Limavady corner forward launched the turnover which ended up leading to NY’s 4th goal a real gem from Ryan Traynor.

New York see off determined Dungiven

New York set the pace for feile in Dungiven with a blistering 3-16 to no score victory over Dungiven in O’Cahan park. New York got off to the best possible start with Mairead Ruane getting on the ball straight from throw in, making 30 yards on one of those trademark solo runs, before finding Mairead Hynes with a great ball who in turn launched an unstoppable shot into the Dungiven net. There was no respite for Dungiven with Ruane plucking the ball from the sky with a great catch and delivering the ball first time into New York ladies own superstar Johanna Levine who duly finished the ball into the net. However, it was not just the forwards the New York management had to thank for the Dungiven shutout, the NY backs were also to the fore with Lauren Mc Manus providing a great turnover in the tackle which set up Heather Durkan for the score of the half with a great 25 yard effort which sailed over the bar. New York added further scores to leave the half time score 2-06 to no score. Dungiven Ladies came out fighting in the second half and really made the New York girls work for every ball , getting some great turnovers.

Mairead Hynes put on a second half display that had the whole of Dungiven talking with some scores that are more often seen in Croke Park than in O’Cahan park. Hynes personal tally of 1-03 does not reflect the influence she had on the game with some real unselfish display of playmaking and defensive work. The deafening silence and stunned looks from the crowd that greeted her breathtaking 45 yard score was an amazing spectacle. Johanna Levine added a further 4 points in the second half to earn a well deserved MVP with an exhibition of fielding All Star Kieran Donaghy would be proud to call his own.

But what makes this panel of girls exceptional is that this is not a 1 , 3 , 10 player team but a true panel of 22 girls with every player capable of playing their roles perfectly to ensure the greater benefit to the team. The defence splitting pass of Kate Delaney for Levine’s 3rd point, Catherine Treacy’s well worked score from a tricky angle and Caitlin Mc Kenna’s four points from midfield are a credit to both the individual talents and dedication of the player’s and the abilities of the coaches to gel this team into a collective talent and make NY the early favourites to achieve the coveted Feile title. Credit also the referee, Sean Mc Intyre, for letting what was a very sporting encounter play out in the best footballing tradition.

Speaking after the game, Dungiven native Frank Treacy team manager, praised his squad for their performances to date “This was a great squad performance from 1-22, a great team effort, it is a true honour to be involved in managing such a great group of players.” Dungiven manager Eimear Murphy was also full of praise for the New York girls but praised her own team's never say die work ethic “Our girls found it tough today but we are delighted with our girls attitude in particular the work rate of our half forwards.” MVP Johanna Levine praised both sets of players and puts the team performance down to “the great team spirit in our squad, in fairness to the Dungiven girls they tried their hardest and made a real tough game of it, we want to be in Celtic Park on Sunday and that’s our goal.”
