New York Ladies shoot the lights out in Strabane

The NY ladies team completed their preparations for feile with a comprehensive 7-09 to 0-01 victory over a determined Strabane Sigersons u14 girls team on Wednesday June 30th. Leading 5-05 to no score at half time the result of this game was never in doubt from the start. That said, the Sigerson’s made the NY ladies work all the way for their scores, but for the brilliance of the NY goalies Emily Skywark and Jackie O'Shea the final result would have been a lot closer. The match began at a frantic pace with a strong wind blowing down the field in New York’s favour. In the 6th minute New York were rewarded for their dominance around the middle of the park with a rasping finish from Johanna Levine following great play and a pinpoint pass from Mairead Hynes.

All over the park New York began dominating their opponents especially the half back line of Mary Kate Lisi , Shannon Hughes and Emily Russell which ensured the first half would be a complete shutout. Colleen Chzanowski added a second goal for New York following a defence splitting solo run and a cool finish into the bottom corner past the Strabane keeper. Further points from Levine and Mairead Hynes ensured the scoreboard kept ticking over in New York's favour. A bullet goal from Caitlyn Mc Kenna nearly took the stanchion off the Strabane net before Johanna Levine added her second goal five minutes before the interval to leave the scores at 5-05 to no score at half time.

Aided by the breeze the Sigersons enjoyed the majority of the possession in the second half with influential midfielder Tammi Lee Mc Crory slicing through the New York defence on several occasions and only for some phenomenal rear guard defending from New York full backs Bridget Sorohan, Nikki Dennison and Mary Ann Coleman the Strabane ladies would have been rewarded for their hard work further out the field. New York added further points to the scoreboard before Margaret Brady rifled the ball into the goal following a great ball inside from Heather Durkan. Emma Mc Girl finished the New York goal spree with an audacious 25 yard lob of the keeper.
Strabane refused to give up the fight though and still carried the game to the New Yorkers and were duly rewarded with a score at the end of the match which earned the biggest cheer of the night from the large crowd. Speaking after the game manager Frank Tracey was happy with the result and the performance of the girls but knew they would face tougher challenges down the line. After the game the Strabane club very generously provided refreshments for all with a delicious platter of food. Afterwards the Strabane club presented the New York team with commemorative medals of the occasion while the Strabane club were presented with Gaelic for Girls t-shirts. To conclude the evening’s presentations both captains were presented with jerseys to mark a wonderful evening’s football.
